Obituary for Franklin "Frank" Darneille

Springfield — Franklin “Frank” Darneille Jr., 88, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at his home surrounded by the love of his family. His was a life well lived. Frank was born Feb. 19, 1930, in Munfordville, Kentucky, to Franklin and Hazel I. Biggs Darneille. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. He married Joan T. Leahy July 23, 1955, at St. Patrick’s Church in Galesburg.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, Frank served in the Korean conflict as a tank commander and received three bronze stars. “Rusty Knobs” retired from WTAX radio station in 1986, where he worked as a broadcast engineer for 40 years. Liked by all, Frank, along with his son David, owned and operated FD Sound, specializing in church and business sound systems. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Knights of Columbus Council #4179.

Frank loved and cherished his family. He was an avid collector of radios and had a special affection for MG sport cars, which he owned and serviced. A loyal Cub fan, he also enjoyed cards and backgammon. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Barr; and grandchildren, Emylee and Benjamin Darneille.

Frank is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan; son, Franklin Darneille III of Chatham; daughter, Lisa (Mark) Niblett of Mukilteo, Washington; son, David (Kate Soler) Darneille of Springfield; grandsons, Edwyn Darneille and Jason Williams; and a large extended family.

A private Mass was held at the Church of the Little Flower in Springfield with Rev. Allen Kemme officiating. Burial was at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield with the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County conducting military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Flower Music Program.
