Obituary

Vancouver, Wash. — Bonny Jean Howerton, 88, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away peacefully Monday, May 18, 2026, in Vancouver. Bonny was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Avon, Illinois, the daughter of Owen and Dorothy (Steele) Beckner. She was raised on a farm near Abingdon, Illinois. One of her greatest joys was being on the farm with her dad. She graduated from Abingdon High School in 1956.

On Aug. 31, 1956, she married Jim Howerton. She and Jim would go on to raise their family in central Illinois. In 1983, they relocated to Portland, Oregon, where Jim became president of American Guaranty Life Insurance Co. They later settled in the Vancouver, Washington, area. Bonny loved the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. She grew beautiful flowers and enjoyed photographing them.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Jim, and their four children: John (Melinda) of Hiawatha, Iowa, Thomas (Vicki) of DuBois, Pennsylvania, Susan (Chuck Krauss) of Vancouver, Washington, and Roger of Portland, Oregon; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cremation rites were performed, and Bonny will be interred at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee, Illinois, at a later date.
