Charles David Vinson passed away on Sept. 29, 2014, at St John's Hospital in Springfield, Ill. David was born in Bakersville, NC, on Dec. 27, 1934, the son of Charles Richard and Pansy Greene Vinson. He married Norma Jean Gibb in Edinburgh, Scotland, on Dec. 9, 1959. They moved to the United States in 1959. He graduated from Bowman High School, Bakersville, NC, and received a football scholarship from Asheville-Biltmore College. David also served proudly with the U.S. Air Force after which he returned to finish his degree at East Tennessee State University. After university, he began working for Pfizer Labs as a certified medical representative where he spent 32 years serving the medical community of Columbia, SC, and surrounding areas. He earned numerous local and national awards in this role as well as meeting many lifelong friends that he cherished throughout his life. David is survived by his wife, Norma, of Columbia, SC; a son, Charles Gibb (Robin) Vinson, of Chatham, Ill.; a sister, Merinda Vinson, of Bakersville, NC; two granddaughters, Jessica (Brandon) Jefferson and Sarah (Josh) Benitone, both of Chatham, Ill.; a niece, Julie (Ricky) Phillips of Bakersville, NC; two great-nieces, Brinkley and Lacey Phillips; and a great-granddaughter, Avery Jefferson. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia. David's ashes will be interred in the Bakersville Memorial Cemetery in Bakersville and in Liberton Kirk Cemetery in Edinburgh, Scotland. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring David may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion St., Columbia, SC 29201 or the Animal Protection League, P.O. Box 5354, Columbia, SC 29250.
