Springfield — Danna Denise "DeeDee" Abner, 68, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Pawnee, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024, at HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield. DeeDee was born May 16, 1956, in Springfield, the daughter of William C. "Bill" and Alvora L. Tuxhorn Sandidge. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Theodore W. "Teddy" Sandidge; and an infant sister.
DeeDee was a member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church and graduated from Pawnee High School in 1974. She began her career as a Sangamon County dispatcher, where her calm demeanor and professionalism were a source of reassurance to many. DeeDee later served as a Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy, exemplifying courage and commitment. Eventually, she transitioned to a career as a dental hygienist, bringing her warmth and kindness to a new field. Through every chapter of her life, DeeDee's radiant personality and her smile touched everyone around her. She also was an honorable member of the Sangamon County Rescue Squad. DeeDee's dedication and service left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her contributions to our community and her ability to brighten any room will never be forgotten. DeeDee's memory will live on in the hearts of her friends, colleagues and all whose lives she impacted.
DeeDee is survived by her son, Aaron C. (wife, Kendra) Abner, of Mount Zion; her granddaughter, Scarlett Abner; her companion, Robin Smith, of Springfield and his children, Mindy and Cody Brant and their son Andrew of Alexander, Cary and Kyle Patterson and their children Oaklynn and Kayden of Mechanicsburg, and Joshua Smith and his son, Remington, of Jacksonville. DeeDee loved her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Cremation rites will be accorded. DeeDee's family will meet friends from 5 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, at the Pawnee United Methodist Church in Pawnee with Rev. Chuck Kurfman officiating. Burial at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Sangamon County Rescue Squad NFP, 8616 State Route 124, Sherman, IL 62684-8460.
