SPRINGFIELD — Derek Jeffrey Banker Barnett, 30, of Springfield and Virden, Illinois, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021, in Springfield. He was born Sept. 7, 1991, in Springfield, the son of Jeffrey L. Barnett and Marlene Banker. He was preceded in death by his father; his grandfather, Jack Banker; and his great-grandparents. Derek graduated from Virden High School in 2010 and was a student at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, enrolled in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration program. He loved spending time with his brother, Justin, his dog, Ladybird, and enjoyed bowling, playing darts and listening to the Grateful Dead. One of the highlights of his life was the time he spent living in California. He also was a former member of BSA Troop 202 in Springfield. Derek is survived by his mother, Marlene (partner, Ralph Wallace) Banker, of Springfield; Two brothers, Justin Banker Barnett of Virden and Alex Wallace of Springfield; and grandparents, Jerry and Yvonne Kennedy of Rochester and Ron and Mary Barnett of Springfield. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, at Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home, with Chaplain Aaron Williamson officiating. Attendees are encouraged to wear tie-dye apparel to honor Derek's memory. Illinois COVID-19 guidance also will be followed, including wearing masks in public indoor settings. Burial will follow at Manchester Cemetery in Manchester.
