Ellen Louise Boxrud, 87, of Springfield, Illinois, died Friday, Sept 10, 2021, at Heritage Health – Springfield. Ellen was born Jan. 8, 1934, in Linton, Indiana, the daughter of Robert T. and Lillian Moody Boxrud. She was preceded in death by her parents. Ellen was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, now Peace Lutheran Church, in Springfield. She graduated from the Illinois Sight Saving School for the Blind, now the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville. Ellen was a resident of the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind (MBH) for 54 years, where she was a member of the Mary Bryant Home Singers, residents' council and Christian singles group. She was a person of deep faith and read the Bible daily. Ellen also was a mentor and friend to many of the MBH's younger residents, always willing to share her wisdom, guidance and love with others. Ellen is survived by two cousins, Marsha (David) Flater of Linton, Indiana, and Rex (Dorothy) Luxton of Rapid City, Michigan. A private celebration of life service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2021, at the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind in Springfield with Rev. Mary Zupansic officiating. Burial was at Lutheran Cemetery in Danville. Memorials honoring Ellen may be made the Mary Bryant Home for the Blind, 2960 Stanton St., Springfield, IL 62703.
