Springfield — Ferol Vaughn Henry, 90, a longtime resident of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, in Meridian, Idaho, in the company of her children.
Born in 1928 in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, Ferol grew up in Sullivan, Illinois, and began her college education with a full scholarship when she was 16 years of age at MacMurray College for Women in Jacksonville, Illinois. She graduated in 1949 with a master's degree in speech and a minor in music/theater, and then began her teaching career at Palmyra High School. She especially enjoyed theater arts and helping her students bring dramatic and musical productions to the stage.
On Nov. 22, 1950, Ferol married WWII veteran William D. Henry of Jacksonville. They moved to Springfield in 1958 and remained there for many years before moving to a country home in Rochester, where they lived for 15 years. She loved the country life and "being a wife and a mom," always holding dear the memories of their family home and the many ongoing activities of their five children. Her husband's career as an insurance agent and financial planner offered them a number of travel opportunities, which they thoroughly enjoyed. They returned to Springfield in 1988 and called The Town House "home" for many years.
Her social interests included the Theatre Guild, The Women's Guild, King's Daughters and the MacMurray Alumni Association, the latter two of which she particularly supported by holding various elected positions. She enjoyed playing bridge, listening to big band music and watching theatrical and musical productions of the stage and screen. A major fan of college basketball, she faithfully followed her chosen team, the University of Illinois "Fighting Illini."
Ferol was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her mother, Pearl Baugher; and stepfather, Sylvan Baugher, of Sullivan. Ferol is survived by her half-brother, Roger Vaughn (Barbara), and her children: Vaughn Henry, Brent Henry (Susan), Lisa Henry Wilkerson, Kelly Henry (Shelly) and Julie Henry.
The family will attend the private burial officiated by Rev. Steven Janoski on July 17, 2019. Memorial donations may be made to the MacMurray College Alumni Association, 447 E. College Ave., Jacksonville, IL 62650.
