Pawnee — Garth Monroe King, 91, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Pawnee, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at the Villas of Holly Brook in Chatham. Garth was born June 5, 1929, in Nashville, Indiana, the son of Carl and Grace Lemley King. He married Mercedes A. Kolaz on Dec. 4, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mercedes, in 1992; a son Garth J. King in 2019; a brother Keith King; and a grandson David King.
Garth graduated from New Berlin High School in 1946. He worked at the Pillsbury Mill in Springfield for 40 years, retiring in 1986 as a maintenance manager. He was a member of the village of Pawnee's Zoning Committee and a ham radio operator.
Garth is survived by two sons, Michael C. (wife, Diane) King of Taylorville and John A. (wife, Jane) King of Decatur, Alabama; five daughters, Susan M. (husband, John) Mangiaracina of Springfield, Anna L. Myers of Terre Haute, Indiana, Paula M. King of Warren, Oregon, Mercedes A. King of Bremerton, Washington, and Carla G. (husband, Mark) Witty of Avon, Indiana; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Rudolph (wife, Edith) King and Gerald (wife, Pam) King, both of Springfield; one sister, W. Joyce (husband, Larry) Miller, of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a companion, Betty Schnapp, of Pawnee.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Pawnee at a later date.
