Obituary

Springfield – George Richard Carter Sr., 97, of Springfield, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. George was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Springfield, the son of George and Edith A. Lee Carter. George married R. Eileen Hinds June 1, 1946, at West Side Christian Church in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eileen, in 2013; two brothers, Bob and Butch; and four sisters, Ruth, Dorothy, Eleanor and Helen. George was a member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He also was a drill sergeant, platoon sergeant, taught martial arts and sniper instruction. He was a plasterer for 60-plus years and was the owner of CnC Lath and Plaster. He was a member of the Plasterers and Cement Masons Local 59 in Springfield, the Pawnee Masonic Lodge #675 A.F. and A.M. and the Springfield DAV Club. George also was a baseball fan and he loved to play golf. George is survived by one son, George R. "Rick" (wife, Mary) Carter Jr., of Pawnee; two daughters, Sandra K. Huff of Taylorville and Pamela S. Carter of Springfield; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A private service will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors at a later date. Memorial contributions honoring George may be made to a charity of your choice.
