George Thomas Young, 84, of Pawnee, Ill., passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Pawnee, the son of Carroll D. and Elta I. Jones Young. He married Norma Lee (Sally) Brawner on June 30, 1951, in Pawnee. He was preceded in death by his parents. George was an active member of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States, a charter member of the Pawnee Lions Club serving a term as president, and a member of the Good Samaritan Club. He graduated from Pawnee High School in 1946. At the young age of seven, he began assisting his father, who was the postmaster of the Pawnee Post Office, and began working full time at the age of 16. George retired from the post office in 1983 after 40 years -- serving 12 years as postmaster. George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sally, of Pawnee, two sons, Robert (wife, Connie) and Ronald (wife, Sherry) Young, both of Pawnee; two daughters, Debra (husband, Greg) Perschbacher of Pawnee and Christine (husband, Bob) Sherrock of Langleyville, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Amanda (husband, Mike) Polistina, Lindsey (husband, Mark) Calhoun, Alicia (companion, Caleb Reber) Smith, Evan and Adam Perschbacher, Blake (wife, Abby) Young and Bailey and Brennen Young; seven great-grandchildren, Adriana, Mason, Avery, Stone, Torsten, Layton and Ryder and many cousins. George's family will meet friends from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 23, at the Curry Funeral Home, 407 Carroll St., in Pawnee. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m. at the Curry Funeral Home. The Rev. Chuck Kurfman will officiate. Burial will be at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee.
