Obituary

Jack A. Gruwell, 95, of Springfield, Ill., passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at his son's home in New Berlin, Ill. Jack was born Dec. 10, 1918, in Oakland, Iowa, the son of John S. and Minnie B. Adams Gruwell. He married Alice M. Broderick on Nov. 30, 1940, in Oak Park, Ill. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, in 2013, and two sisters. Jack was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in European theater. He and his wife, Alice, were co-owners of the Springfield Cycle and Lock Co. in Springfield for 14 years. Jack was a longtime Atlanta Braves and Dallas Cowboys fan. He loved working outdoors and spending time with his family. He is survived by his son, Jack B. (wife, Carol) Gruwell, of New Berlin; his daughter, Sharon A. (husband, Ralph) Green, of DeKalb, Ill.; five grandchildren, Todd (wife, Molly) Green of DeKalb, Dave (wife, Mary) Green of Minneapolis, Minn., Mike (wife, Denise) Green of Frisco, Texas, Marcus and Helena Gruwell, of New Berlin; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jack's family will meet friends Friday, June 13, 2014, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at noon at the Wilson Park Funeral Home in Edinburg, Ill. The Rev. Raymond Radae will officiate. Burial will be at Morrisonville Cemetery in Morrisonville, Ill. Memorial contributions honoring Jack may be made to Memorial Home Services, Attn: Donations and Giving, 720 N. Bond St., Springfield, IL 62702.
