Pawnee — James Daniel Haney, 84, of Pawnee, Illinois, died Sept. 14, 2017, at the Illinois Veterans' Home in Quincy. Jim was born Dec. 18, 1932, in Smithville, Arkansas, the son of Ernest H. and Dorothy M. Maxfield Haney. Jim married Marilyn F. Biggs on May 19, 1951, in Pearl. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn; an infant son, Mark; two sisters, Alice Robinson and Captolia Fester; and three brothers, Bill, Edgar and Ransom Haney. He attended the Pawnee Assembly of God Church. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Valley Forge, (CV-45), in Korea. Jim was a meat cutter at Castor's Super Market in Springfield until its closing. He then was the owner/operator of the Red Fox Store at State and Washington streets in Springfield for several years. Later, he owned Herbie's Café in Pawnee for 10 years until he retired. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in Springfield and a member of the Moose Lodge in Pittsfield. Jim attended Pearl High School and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Jim is survived by two daughters, Diana (husband, John) Landers of Auburn and Kelly (husband, Kitt) Thein of Pawnee; one son, Steven (wife, Michele) Haney of Pawnee; one sister, Starr McDaniles, of Pearl; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim's family will meet friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at the Pawnee Assembly of God Church, 1001 Eighth St., Pawnee, IL 62558. An additional visitation will be held at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at the church, with the Rev. A.B. Bennett and Rev. Justin Stout, Jim's grandson, officiating. Burial will be at Green Pond Cemetery in Pearl with military honors. Memorials honoring Jim may be made to the Illinois Veterans' Home, 1707 N. 12th St., Quincy, IL 62301. Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee is serving the family of Jim Haney.
