Obituary

Pawnee — James William Marvin, 92, died at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017. He was born in Rock Island, Ill., on July 18, 1924. His parents were James F. and Mildred (Oberstaller) Marvin. After graduating from Rock Island High School, he was immediately drafted into the U.S. Army. He served under Gen. George S. Patton, where he was in the Third Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron Mechanized Third Army. He was awarded Battle Stars for four military campaigns: Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Rhineland and Central Europe. He also received the Good Conduct Medal, European Theatre of Operation Medal and Victory Medal. He was awarded a Silver Star for Gallantry in Action against an Armed Enemy. He graduated from Augustana College and taught school for 32 years at East Moline School District 37. He especially enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He had a few Irish Setters over the years, with Abby, the last one, being his favorite. He married the former Marie Galloway. He is survived by his wife, Marie; her twin daughters and their families: Kathryn (husband, David) and their children, Carolyn, Meg and Jonathan, and Ellen (husband, Bill) and their children, Billy, Joe and Katie. He also is survived by his sister, Carol (late husband, Everett) and several nieces and nephews. He was a lifelong member of the Rock Island Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church. A private family service will be held. Burial will be at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring James may be made to the Pawnee Community Education Fund, P.O. Box 253, Pawnee, IL 62558, or to the Horse Creek Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 407, Pawnee, IL 62558. Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee is serving the family of James Marvin.
