Joan Lee Spencer, 73, of Charleston, Ill., died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, Ill. Joan was born April 3, 1943, in Mattoon, Ill., the daughter of William G. and Irene M. Ethington Parker. She married Charles Spencer Sr. on March 10, 1982, in Champaign, Ill. Joan was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Charles, in 2008; and her stepson, Bobby Spencer.
Joan worked as a librarian at Charleston Carnegie Public Library in Charleston since 1987 and retired in 2016. Joan loved to read, garden and travel, and she enjoyed doing crafts.
Joan is survived by her mother, Irene, of Champaign; two daughters, Dawn M. (husband, Dan) Barkley, of Springfield and Vikki Spencer, of Meriden, Conn.; five stepsons, Charles Spencer, of Charleston, Jim (wife, Judy) Spencer of Urbana, John (wife, Toni) Spencer of Champaign, Steve (partner, Bill) Spencer of LaGrange, Ill. and Mike (wife, Lynn) Spencer of Urbana; five grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Glenn Parker, of La Junta, Colo.; two sisters, Diane (husband, Larry) Ferrol of Clearwater, Fla. and Christine (husband, Scott) Wulff of White Heath, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the Charleston Carnegie Public Library on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring Joan may be made to St. John's Hospice, 800 E. Carpenter St., Springfield, IL 62702 or to the Charleston Carnegie Public Library, 712 Sixth St., Charleston, IL 61920.
