Pawnee — John F. Fortner, 92, of Pawnee, Illinois, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy.
John was born Aug. 17, 1927, in Springfield, the son of Jess H. and Mary E. Conley Fortner. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; three sisters; and one granddaughter.
John was a member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church, graduated from Feitshans High School in Springfield and was named to the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame. John served his country for 30 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a bookkeeper, SK-1 First Class, in 1976.
He is survived by one son, Kent Fortner, of Pawnee; one daughter, Pamela E. (husband, Randall L.) Wheeler of Oblong; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
John's family will meet friends from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at the Pawnee United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019, at the church with Rev. Chuck Kurfman officiating. Burial will follow at Auburn Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.
