Springfield — Joseph Thomas Painter, 67, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at his daughter's home in Springfield. He was born Aug. 13, 1955, in Springfield, the son of Joseph T. and Doris A. Baker Painter Sr. Joe married Paula K. Tonjes Sept. 16, 1983, in Springfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Pat Timms.

Joe was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1973. He worked at the Illinois Secretary of State in custodial services for 32 years, retiring in 2018. He enjoyed playing cards and watching TV, especially John Wayne and old war movies.

Joe is survived by his wife, Paula, of Springfield; one daughter, Erica N. (husband, Brett) Behl, of Springfield; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, with the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County conducting military honors.
