SPRINGFIELD — Larry Eugene Morris, 72, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 25, 2021. Larry was born April 1, 1949, in Springfield, the son of Eugene and Patricia Marion Morris. He married Patricia Gibson in 1987, and she preceded him in death on July 19, 2009. He then married Tami Bering on May 14, 2016, and she preceded him in death on July 21, 2019. He also was preceded in death by his father; grandparents; sisters, Yvonne Sronce and Dorothy, Barbara and Joyce Morris; and numerous aunts and uncles. Larry enlisted in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Army, serving for more than 20 years, including several tours in Vietnam. Stateside, he served as a military police canine officer at Naval Station Norfolk in Norfolk, Virginia, prior to moving to Missouri and eventually back to his hometown of Springfield. Larry was a well-decorated veteran with many medals, including the Silver Star and Bronze Star. In recent years, he was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Honor Guard, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Disabled Veterans activities. He is survived by one daughter, Robin (Rick) Hollander; two grandchildren, Matthew Lee and Christina (Christopher) Miller; five great-grandchildren, Sully, Minka, Mayim, Zane and Kati; his mother, Patricia Sronce; three brothers, Gary (Donna) Crompton, Jim (Angie) Sronce and his best friend whom he called a brother, Denny Bierbaum; one sister, Karen Gamboa; four aunts, Barbara Seward, Mary Ellen (Charles) Clemons, Theresa Smith and Margaret Millar; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Tommy and Wanda Harbour. Cremation will be accorded, and a private family burial will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, with military services provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County. Larry's family will meet friends during a luncheon in his memory at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 2021, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars at 2349 Stockyard Road in Springfield.
