Springfield — Mae Jean Hirano, 67, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Pawnee, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023, at her home in Springfield. She was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Springfield, the daughter of Ernest J. and Mae N. Brooks Oglebay. Mae married Dennis R. Hirano on Nov. 7, 1978. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dennis, in 1998; three brothers, Robert, Ernest "Ray" and Jimmy Oglebay.

Mae was a member of New Horizons Southern Baptist Church in Pawnee. She graduated from Lanphier High School in 1974. She worked in housekeeping at Doctors Hospital in Springfield and Sunrise Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Virden. Mae enjoyed playing bingo and planting flowers in her yard, and she loved her dogs.

Mae is survived by one son, Dennis W. (Victoria Beagles) Hirano, of Greenbrier, Arkansas; one daughter, Melissa S. (Derrick) McGrone, of Pawnee; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mary A. Spain of Pawnee and Dorothy Whitehead of Springfield; two nephews and three nieces.

Mae's family will meet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023, at Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee, with Rev. Jesse Meredith officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
