Obituary

Pawnee — Martin Asbury Manning, 98, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of Pawnee, died Sunday, May 17, 2020, at Aperion Care Jacksonville. Martin was born July 29, 1921, in Farmersville, the son of Asbury and Mattie Alexander Manning. He married Mary Jane Dixon. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane, in 2004; a son, Martin Jay Manning, in 2007; and four brothers, Claude, Irvine, Burdette and Morgan. Martin was a U.S. Army veteran, he fought in battles and campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Martin was awarded the Purple Heart for a wound he received in a battle in Luxembourg on Jan. 22, 1945. He received three service bars: the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with one silver battle star, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre ribbon and the American Campaign Medal Philippine Liberation ribbon. Martin retired from Sangamo Electric Co. in Springfield. Martin is survived by a step-granddaughter, Robin Sudduth and step great granddaughter Emily Earl as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews in the Pawnee area. Martin's family will have a private graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2020, at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee. The Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Pawnee Food Pantry, P.O. Box 304, Pawnee, IL 62558-0304.
