Mary F. Carswell, 96, of Pawnee, Ill., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at Heritage Health in Bloomington, Ill. Mary was born March 18, 1916, in Sherman, Ill., the daughter of Arthur B. and Ruby J. Mattingly Lynch. She married Clifford "Tip" Carswell Oct. 14, 1939, in Springfield, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clifford "Tip," in 1995; two brothers, James and Albert Lynch and a sister, Eileen Gochanour. Mary was a member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and charter member of the Sangamon County Home Extension. She also served as an election judge and volunteered with the Vita Program. Mary was a graduate of Springfield High School's class of 1935. She enjoyed playing cards, especially with her bridge club. She also enjoyed her Bingo evenings and doing crosswords, Sudoku and jigsaw puzzles. She and Dorothy Landrey liked to eat out after church on Sundays. She made great pies, Christmas cookies and fudge that her family appreciated. Mary was determined to live independently, and she did until this past November. Mary is survived by a son, Jim (wife, Marcia) Carswell of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; a daughter, Ann (husband, Steve) Baugh of Bloomington, Ill.; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Mary's family will meet friends Saturday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Pawnee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Flo Scott will officiate. Burial will be at Zion Cemetery in Pawnee. Memorial contributions honoring Mary may be made to the Pawnee United Methodist Church or the Pawnee Fire/EMS. Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee is serving the family of Mary Carswell.
