Mary Rose Cooper, 84, of Springfield, Ill., passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Mary was born Feb. 3, 1928 in Riverton, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Albina Prehoda Vala. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Wes and John Vala. Mary was a U.S. veteran, serving as a Private First Class in the United Stated Marine Corp. Mary had worked at Franklin Life Insurance Company and she retired from Central Management Services as an office manager and from the Meijer. Mary is survived by her son, Sam H. (companion, Nancy) Cooper, of Pawnee, Ill.; two daughters, Kathy M. Hayes of Charlotte, N.C., and Daniele L. (husband, John) Muchow of Springfield, Ill.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson; a brother, Martin Vala of Riverton; three sisters, Helen E. (B.J.) Mayer, of Naperville, Ill., Theresa B. Dickerson of Florida and Albina (Babe) Busek of Woodstock, Ga.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan., 8, 2013 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions honoring Mary may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee is serving the family of Mary Cooper.
