Obituary

R. Norman Megginson, 77, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday, May 12, 2022, at Springfield Memorial Hospital. Norm was born in Pawnee on June 6, 1944, the son of Ralph O. and Leila M. Boblitt Megginson. Depending on whom you ask, he was either named for his famous birthday or a seed salesman; whatever the truth, he spent his childhood farming, getting into mischief and participating in 4-H. Norm married Vicki Fine on April 4, 2001, in Champaign. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved stepmother, Mary Megginson; and his son, Rand L. Megginson in 1996. After graduating from Pawnee High School in 1962, he joined the Illinois Air National Guard and continued in his family's farming footsteps, eventually being joined by his son Todd. Norm loved adventure, and throughout his life, traveled to over 40 countries and seven continents — once making it to every continent in eight days with his wife, Vicki. Infinitely charming, Norm easily made friends with everyone he met, never failing to rely on a well-timed pun for a laugh. He approached life with hard work, determination, and a love for all things dessert. Musicals were another passion, and he attended many repeatedly. A lifelong member of the Pawnee United Methodist Church, Norm could be heard belting out "The Old Rugged Cross," serving several years on the church board, attempting to get his children to behave and enjoying men's prayer breakfasts each week until his death. Norm truly enjoyed the time he spent in fellowship with his family and friends. Norm was a member of the Ansar Temple, Valley of Springfield Consistory, Springfield York Rite and Ansar Shrine's Past Masters Unit, and a past patron of the Pawnee Chapter #436 Order of the Eastern Star. He also was a past master, 50-year member and life member of the Pawnee Lodge #675 AF & AM and was involved with the Springfield Court #20 Royal Order of Jesters. Norm served as president of the Pawnee High School Alumni Association in 2008. At age 62, Norm enrolled at the University of Illinois Springfield. He eagerly attended every class, wrote every paper and quickly became a popular student. He was later elected president of the Dads Association at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He took on the role with fervor, loving everything from handing out pamphlets and leading meetings to handing out awards during the homecoming game. He continued to be an enthusiastic member of the Rotary Club of Springfield and served as sergeant at arms. For many years, he was a devoted volunteer for Springfield's Daily Bread program, delivering smiles and hot meals to elderly residents — even earning Volunteer of the Year. He was also a proud Pawnee resident, constantly lauding his town, classmates and friends to anyone he came across. His memory will be cherished by his wife of 21 happy years, Dr. Vicki Megginson, of Springfield; two sons, Todd N. (wife, Aubrie) Megginson of Pawnee and Arrow S. (wife, Stephanie Lynn) Megginson of Phoenix, Arizona, one daughter, Caitlin M. (husband, Josef) Megginson Dicken, of Champaign; two stepsons, James Dorner of Champaign and David P. (wife, Karen) Dorner of Elmhurst; one grandson, whom he helped raise, Kylan J. Dorner, of Champaign; one sister, Carole Christner, of Orlando, Florida; one brother, Mike W. (wife, Sandy) Megginson, of Bonita Springs, Florida; and several other grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Norm's family will meet friends from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Pawnee United Methodist Church at 402 Sixth St. in Pawnee. A Masonic service will begin after the visitation. An additional visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 20, at the church, with Rev. Bobby Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rand Linton Megginson Memorial Scholarship at the University of Illinois Springfield through the University of Illinois Foundation, 1305 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801, or Senior Services of Central Illinois' Daily Bread program, 701 W. Mason St., Springfield, IL 62702.
