Raymond "Ray" Keith McHatton, 88, of Springfield, Illinois, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, at Villa Health Care East in Sherman. Ray was born Feb. 7, 1934, in Colfax, the son of Raymond and Meryle Daniels McHatton. He married Roselyn M. Nichols July 12, 1964, in Macon. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roselyn, in 2016; a brother, Dean; and a sister, Imogene.
He was a member of the Cotton Hill United Methodist Church in Springfield (formerly Woodside United Methodist Church). As a member of Woodside United Methodist Church, he participated in the choir, played the piano and served as the church's financial secretary for several years.
Ray was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a sixth grade math and social studies teacher for more than 35 years at Iles School with District 186 in Springfield. After retiring, Ray volunteered at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. He also was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Lake Press Club and Springfield Motor Boat Club.
Ray is survived by four sons, Dan S. (wife, Karen) Shields of Springfield, Bill R. (wife, Sandy) Shields of Phoenix, Arizona, Kevin R. McHatton of Waverly and Keith R. (wife, Bridget) McHatton of Springfield; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Duane Nichols, of Evansville, Indiana; a niece, Janine Goodin; and a nephew, Steve McHatton.
Ray's family will meet friends from 10:30 a.m. to until the time of the funeral service at noon Saturday, Nov. 12, 2022, at Cotton Hill United Methodist Church at 5931 N. Cotton Hill Road in Springfield, with Rev. Michael Madden officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
