Pawnee — Robert Wayne Purvis, 75, of Pawnee, Illinois, entered into his Heavenly Father's arms Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at Arcadia Care Jacksonville. He fought a lengthy, challenging journey with Parkinson's disease.

Robert was born May 11, 1950, in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Richard C. and Lola Hubbs Purvis. He married Lorna Mae Neuber at Calvary Church in Springfield in 1992. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard L. Purvis and Donald Purvis; and his wife, Lorna, in 2024.

A 1969 graduate of Pleasant Plains High School, Robert lettered in track and field. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army with the Medical Materiel Agency, achieving the rank of sergeant. His service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon.

After receiving Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, Robert lived a life devoted to God. He was a longtime member of Calvary Church in Springfield, where he served faithfully for decades as an usher, board member, divorce recovery program facilitator, life group leader and coach for one of Calvary's men's softball teams. He participated in numerous mission trips and outreaches and was awarded certificates for reading through his Bible in one year — multiple times.

Robert was a proud Chicago Cubs fan and also enjoyed cheering on the Chicago Bears. He loved old western shows and movies, followed NASCAR racing and once experienced his own "ride of a lifetime" at the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Daytona International Speedway. His banter, laughter and easygoing nature made him a joy to be around. His smile and humble, genuine personality put others at ease. His life was enriched by generations of family and friends, and he was affectionately known as Bob and Papa by those who loved him deeply.

He is survived by one son, Kevin (wife, Heather) Purvis, of Springfield; one daughter, Michelle (husband, Tyler) Bauer, of Riverton; four grandchildren, Zerrick Bauer, Gabriella Houston, Sierra Purvis and Gavin Bauer; his twin brother, Leroy Purvis, of North Carolina; one sister, Mary Raye, of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Cremation rites were accorded. Robert's family will honor his life at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2026, with a graveside service at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, with Pastor Paul Rose officiating. The Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will provide military honors.
