ATHENS – Ronald Carl Cuny, 70, of Athens, passed away Monday, August 22, 2016 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, Ill. Ron was born June 24, 1946, in Aurora, Ill., the son of Norman J. and Myrtle R. Pinkowski Cuny. He married Loretta Ann Hopkins on Aug. 23, 2013 at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Elkhart, Ind. Ron was a member of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Springfield, the American Legion Post #129, Athens, Ill., Fraternal Order of Eagles #437, Springfield, Ill., Knights of Columbus Council #5754, Petersburg, Ill. Ron was also a 4th Degree member of the K of C., a member of the Springfield YMCA, and a Covenant Member of the Sisters of Victory Noll, Huntington, IN. Ron was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving two years active duty on the USS Cascade stationed at Newport, R.I. and four years in the Navy reserves. Ron was a high school history teacher, Danville, Ill., and owned the Ronald Carl Cuny Insurance Agency, Ft. Wayne, Ind., he was a fitness trainer at YMCA, and was on the USA and world power lifting team w/Ernie Frantz, from Ottawa, Ill.. Ron graduated from Central High School, Aurora, Ill. and Illinois State University in Bloomington, Ill. Ron had worked for Allstate Insurance in Ft. Wayne, Ind. and was also a financial advisor in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Ron is survived by his wife, Loretta, of Athens; two sons, Joshua Cuny, of Amarillo, Texas and Lucas Cuny, of Redlands, Calf.; three stepsons, Matthew (wife, Carlita) Favero, of Collegeville, Penn., Douglas (wife, Lety) Favero, Oaxaca, Mexico and Jonathan Favero of Davis, Calif.; one brother, Norman (wife, Nancy) Cuny, Sandwich, Ill.; two grandchildren, Jackson and Misty Cuny; five step grandchildren, Haley & Lily Favero, Alex, Pablo and Cristina Favero-Cruz and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron said the best time in his life was when he raised his sons. He was ever so sweet, ever so kind, always a gentleman and respectful. His true nature was calm. Ron loved his country and was proud to be a veteran. He loved to travel and didn't know a stranger. He loved to dance and sing and to exercise and he encouraged others to be fit, too. Ron loved the Catholic Church and his 300 Sisters of Victory Noll, in Huntington, Ind. Most of all, he loved his God and his wife, Loretta. Ron spoke often of going to be with God someday.
