Springfield -- Roselyn Marie McHatton, 81, of Springfield, Illinois, died at 11:20 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield. Roselyn was born Feb. 13, 1935, in Coloma, Michigan, the daughter of Vernon R. and Cyrease McKean Nichols. She married Raymond K. McHatton, July 12, 1964, in Macon, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving mother, Ilene Nichols, who raised Roselyn; and her brother Thomas Nichols.
Roselyn was a member of the Cotton Hill United Methodist Church (formerly Woodside United Methodist Church) and the United Methodist Women, and she was a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Illinois State University and Millikin University. She was a teacher for more than 30 years at schools throughout Springfield and Decatur, and she specialized in teaching blind students. She also was a certified hospital chaplain at Doctor's Hospital in Springfield and a mentor for a prison ministry. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and a member of the board of directors for Positive Options Referrals and Alternatives (PORA). Roselyn loved gardening, bird watching, knitting, crocheting, puzzles and playing board games.
She is survived by her husband, Ray; four sons, Dan S. (wife, Karen) Shields of Springfield, Bill R. (wife, Janet) Shields of Phoenix, Arizona, Kevin R. (wife, Angela) McHatton of Waverly and Keith R. (wife, Bridget) McHatton of Springfield; nine grandchildren; one brother, Duane (wife, Norma) Nichols of Evansville, Indiana; one niece; one nephew and several cousins.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2016, at the Cotton Hill United Methodist Church at 5931 N. Cotton Hill Road in Springfield. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the church with the Rev. Sharon Treptow officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.
