Pawnee — Thomas A. Griffith, 81, of Pawnee, Illinois, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Tom was born Dec. 8, 1936, in Springfield, the son of Paul and Velma Skaggs Griffith. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Terry Griffith.
Tom graduated from Lanphier High School in 1954 and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He later graduated from Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois Springfield), where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1976 and a master's degree in environmental studies in 1980. He was a registered professional engineer and worked in the Illinois Department of Transportation's Bureau of Statewide Program Planning. He retired in 1995 after 37 years of service.
Tom was a longtime member of the Pawnee Assembly of God Church. He was a member of the church's board of trustees, secretary-treasurer, men's ministry leader and taught several adult Sunday School classes. He sang in the choir, worship team, church plays and ensemble. He also was a member and chairman of the Springfield area Promise Keepers task force and attended the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., in 1997. Tom also served for a year in home missions at the Teen Challenge Academy for behaviorally troubled girls in Sundance, Wyoming, from 1998-99.
Tom is survived by three daughters, Linda (husband, Danny) Wilson of Williamsville, Sue Mellenthin of Quincy and Amber (husband, Andy) Meek of Springfield; one son, Thom (wife, Tricia) Landers, of Bryan, Texas; one sister-in-law, Hilda Griffith of White House, Tennessee; one niece, Terri Lynn (husband, Steve) Solario, of White House, Tennessee; one nephew, Paul (wife, Carol) Griffith, of Miamisburg, Ohio, 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Pawnee Assembly of God Church with Rev. A.B. Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee.
In lieu of flowers, Tom's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Pawnee Assembly of God Church, 1001 N. Eighth St., Pawnee, IL 62558.
