Obituary

PAWNEE — William "Bill" Don Springer, 86, of Pawnee, Illinois, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, in Taylorville. He was born June 25, 1935, in Springfield, the son of Herman K. and Anna J. Lipp Springer. Bill married Evarita J. Pleshe on Aug. 4, 1956, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Kincaid. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Don Springer; a son-in-law, Kent Brown; a brother, Herman K. Springer; a sister, Rose "Peg" A. Crist; and a grandson, Brandon King. Bill was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Kincaid and graduated from Pawnee High School in 1953. He worked as a communication technician for the Illinois State Police. He later continued in his father's footsteps, owning and operating the Springer Insurance Agency in Pawnee, where he retired and sold his business in 1996 after more than 31 years of service. After retiring, he worked part time as a courtesy driver for Crossroads Ford. Bill was active in the Pawnee community, serving on the Pawnee Fire Department, as Pawnee Village treasurer, the Pawnee Public Library and treasurer of the Pawnee CUSD 11 school board. He managed the Pawnee Calvary Cemetery and was a member of the St. Mary's Knights of Columbus Council #6379, for which he served as Grand Knight. He also was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus' Bishop Griffin Assembly #0201. Bill was recognized for his community service and achievements, receiving Pawnee High School's Distinguished Alumni Award. He loved being with family, collecting automobiles of all makes and models, especially Volkswagens, and playing bocce ball. Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Evarita Springer, of Pawnee; one son, Jason S. (wife, Kimberly) Springer, of Weedsport, New York; two daughters, Kathy A. Brown of Hartford, Kentucky, and Lisa J. (husband, Edward) Bowen of Pawnee; eight grandchildren, Stella, Samantha, Shannon, Edward Jr., Payge, Kari, Grace and Miranda; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A visitation will be held at 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, 2021, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Kincaid, with Rev. Msgr. David Lantz officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, including wearing masks in public indoor settings. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Pawnee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pawnee Food Pantry, P.O. Box 304, Pawnee, IL 62558. Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee is serving the family of Bill Springer.
